When to Call for Emergency Dental Care

Contact our office promptly if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain: Pain that interferes with eating, sleeping or daily activities.
  • A broken or cracked tooth: Especially when there is pain, sensitivity or a sharp edge.
  • A knocked-out or displaced tooth: Dental injuries that require immediate guidance.
  • Swelling or a suspected infection: Swollen gums, facial swelling or a painful area around a tooth.
  • A lost filling or crown: A tooth that has lost its restoration and may need protection.
  • An injury to your child’s teeth: Pain or damage involving baby teeth or permanent teeth.

If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, call 470-239-8110. Describe your symptoms rather than waiting for the problem to become more uncomfortable.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

For a Toothache

Gently rinse your mouth with warm water and use floss to remove food caught between teeth. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums. Call our office so we can discuss your symptoms and arrange an evaluation.

For a Broken Tooth

Rinse gently with warm water and use a cold compress on the outside of your face if there is swelling. Avoid chewing on the affected side and contact us promptly.

For a Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Seek dental care immediately. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, and keep it moist. If it cannot be placed back in its socket, put it in milk or a tooth-preservation solution while seeking care. Do not scrub the root or let the tooth dry out.

For a Lost Crown or Filling

Keep the crown or restoration if you have it, avoid chewing on the affected tooth and call our office. Do not use household glue to reattach a restoration.

What Happens During an Emergency Visit?

  1. Discussing the problem: We ask about your symptoms, the injury or tooth involved, and relevant medical history.
  2. Evaluating the cause: Dr. Muppuru examines the area and determines whether dental X-rays or other evaluation is needed.
  3. Explaining your options: We discuss the recommended treatment, estimated fees and insurance benefits before proceeding.
  4. Addressing urgent needs: Depending on the findings, care may involve stabilizing the tooth, repairing a restoration or planning further treatment.
  5. Arranging follow-up: You receive instructions and a plan for any additional visits or specialist care.

Treatment may include a filling, a dental crown, an extraction or root canal treatment when appropriate. Dr. Muppuru provides selected root canal cases in-house and refers complex cases. An emergency appointment may address the immediate concern while further treatment is completed at another visit.

Emergency Dental Care for Children

Dr. Muppuru has more than five years of direct patient-care experience working with children. If your child has a toothache or dental injury, tell us their age and whether the affected tooth is a baby tooth or permanent tooth, if you know.

Visit our emergency pediatric dentistry page for more information. Children who require IV sedation or care beyond our office’s capabilities are referred for appropriate treatment.

Insurance and Payment Options

We accept most PPO insurance plans and welcome out-of-network patients. Our team helps explain estimated costs and available benefits so you understand the recommended care.

CareCredit and Cherry financing are available, subject to approval and provider terms. See our financial options or ask about payment arrangements when you call.
