When Might You Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers a tooth to restore its shape and function. Unlike a filling that repairs part of a tooth, a crown covers the prepared tooth above the gumline.

Dr. Muppuru may recommend a crown for:

  • A broken or weakened tooth: Restore damaged tooth structure and help protect what remains.
  • A large filling: Support a tooth when too little healthy structure remains for another filling.
  • A tooth treated with a root canal: Provide protection when the tooth’s location and remaining structure call for a crown.
  • A misshapen or severely discolored tooth: Address appearance when a more conservative option is not appropriate.
  • A dental implant: Complete a single-tooth replacement with a crown supported by the implant.

If a smaller restoration can adequately repair your tooth, we will discuss that option. Learn more about tooth-colored fillings and dental implants.

What to Expect During Crown Treatment

Dental crown treatment at our office typically involves two visits. Your treatment plan may include additional appointments if the tooth needs other care first.

  1. Examination and planning: Dr. Muppuru evaluates your tooth and discusses the recommended treatment, crown material, estimated fees and insurance benefits.
  2. Tooth preparation: The area is numbed, damaged or decayed structure is addressed, and the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown.
  3. Impressions and temporary protection: We record the prepared tooth for fabrication of your custom crown. A temporary crown generally protects the tooth between visits.
  4. Final placement: Dr. Muppuru checks the crown’s fit, appearance and bite before securing it. We then review care instructions and answer your questions.

If you feel anxious about treatment, tell us before your appointment. Nitrous oxide is available when appropriate, and Dr. Muppuru can discuss comfort options based on your health and treatment needs.

Caring for Your Crown

Follow the instructions provided for your temporary crown, including any restrictions on sticky or hard foods. After your permanent crown is placed, continue brushing, cleaning between your teeth and attending recommended dental visits. The natural tooth beneath a crown still needs protection from decay.

Contact us if your crown feels loose, your bite feels uneven or discomfort persists. If you clench or grind your teeth, ask Dr. Muppuru whether a nightguard would be appropriate to help protect your teeth and restorations.

Dental Crown Costs and Insurance

Your crown estimate depends on the material selected and any additional treatment your tooth requires. We explain the proposed care and estimated patient responsibility before you proceed.

We accept most PPO insurance plans and welcome out-of-network patients. Crown benefits vary by plan, and our team can help you understand applicable coverage and limitations. CareCredit and Cherry financing are available, subject to approval and provider terms. Visit our financial options page for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Do I need a crown or a filling?

+

The choice depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains and where the damage is located. A filling may be sufficient for a smaller repair, while a crown may be recommended when a tooth needs more support. Dr. Muppuru will explain the findings and your options.

Will my dental crown look natural?

+

Tooth-colored crowns can be designed to complement the shade and shape of nearby teeth. Dr. Muppuru will discuss material choices based on the tooth’s location, your bite and your appearance goals.

Do you provide same-day crowns?

+

Our office does not currently offer same-day crown fabrication. Crown treatment typically involves a preparation visit and a second visit to place the completed restoration.

Is getting a dental crown painful?

+

Local anesthesia is used during tooth preparation to help keep you comfortable. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness may occur afterward. We provide aftercare instructions and encourage you to contact us if symptoms persist or worsen.

How long will a dental crown last?

+

A crown can last many years, but its lifespan depends on factors such as oral hygiene, the condition of the supporting tooth, bite forces and habits such as grinding. Regular checkups help us monitor the crown and surrounding tissues.

Does every crown require a root canal first?

+

No. A crown may be needed because of structural damage even when root canal treatment is unnecessary. If an examination identifies a problem involving the tissue inside your tooth, Dr. Muppuru will explain whether root canal treatment or a specialist evaluation is needed.
